'Plain English Campaign'

「簡潔な英語を書こう！」っていうキャンペーン実施中らしいです。いつからやっているのかは知りませんが。

その中からいくつか具体的なキャンペーン事項を。

  • 'The longest sentence we have ever seen'（私たちが今までに確認した中で最長の文）

凄まじいです。確かに最後までピリオドがないので、少なくとも権利上は、「一つの文」ではありますね。

でも良く見ると、コロンやセミコロンがあるし、特に、(a),(b),（その後なぜか）(3)、さらにはFIRST, SECOND, THIRD, LASTといった部分もあるので、事実上は、複数の文がコロンやセミコロンによって繋げられたものだと言えなくもありませんね――読みづらいことに変わりはないけど。

ちなみに、僕自身がごく最近出会った「うわ、長っ！」っていう文は、今の文の長さには遠く及びませんが、次の二つでしょうか。

この人の文章は全体的に読みづらかったんですが、中でもこれは凄まじかったです。いくらでも分解出来るし、むしろそうした方が分かり易いはずなのに、なんでわざわざこんな書き方するかなあ、もう・・・。

で、次に挙げる文を書いた人は、全体的には比較的読み易い文章を書いている人なのに、この部分だけなぜか突然こんなん出ちゃってます。

それぞれの文の出典および著者名は、敢えて言いません（そのついでにクイズにしても面白いだろうけど、絶対誰も答えてくれないでしょう）。

ちなみに僕自身は、昨日、「長い文」を書いたわけですが（どれのことかは言わずもがなですよね？ 実はこのネタのための前フリだったのだ）、別に「簡潔な日本語キャンペーン」に参加していないのでイイんです！

個人的な事情で上に挙げたようなタイプの文章がわんさと出て来る文献を読まなきゃいけないわけだけど、そんな文献の著者たちには是非、このキャンペーンに賛同し、かつ、実践して頂きたいと懇願せずにはいられません。

たとえば――

  • 'The A to Z of alternative words'(言葉の言い換えA-Z)

左側のリストに並んでいる「むつかしい言葉」を、それぞれ右のように言い換えましょうというわけ。

っていうか個人的には、左側のリストに並んでいる単語や熟語に結構お馴染みのものが多いんですけど・・・。

ざあっと見ている最中、卑屈な笑いが止まりませんでした。

あと、

  • 'Avoid nominalisation'（名詞化を避ける）

これはもう、ホントにそう思いますね。

動詞や形容詞が名詞化された語をズラズラと連ねた英文に行き当たることが結構多くて、確かにこの方法だと、かなり抽象度が高くて複雑な内容の事柄を、比較的コンパクトに言えてしまうような気がします。ただ、それを読み取らなきゃならない側としてはその分しんどくなるわけです。「圧縮」されたものを「解凍」しなきゃならない。今まではその都度、「これは英語圏の人特有の思考形式を表現したものであって、別に悪文てわけじゃないんだ」と自分に言い聞かせてたんですが、でもこれからは、「出たな、この悪文とその著者め！」と堂々と思うことが出来ます――まあ、そう思ったところで、結局は「泣き寝入り」しか出来ないんですけどね。

いずれにせよ、こういうサイトの記事を読んでいると、英語圏の人たちが自分たちの言語（英語）についてどう捉えているかを垣間見ることが出来て、興味深いです。
